Mombasa Level 4

As Kenya confronts pressing health issues like non-communicable diseases (NCDs), respiratory illnesses, and maternal health concerns, community focused hospital design becomes a crucial part of the solution. Our Mombasa Level 4 Hospital Project, designed by Healthcare Designers Ltd (HDL), exemplifies the best hospital designs in Kenya, showcasing how thoughtful spatial planning and functional medical layouts directly support national health priorities while delivering quality care in high-demand urban areas.

 Designing for Non-Communicable Disease Management

NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and cancers now dominate Kenya’s healthcare burden, accounting for over 50% of hospital admissions and 27% of deaths. These conditions require hospitals with:

  • Dedicated outpatient and diagnostic areas
  • Medication management zones
  • Secure data-handling spaces for long-term patient tracking

At the Mombasa facility, the inclusion of a pharmacy with dual dispensing bays, a lab/ultrasound wing, and clearly separated consultation rooms ensures efficient NCD care and minimizes wait times, addressing frequent queries like “hospital layout for chronic care” and “NCD facility design in Kenya.”

Reducing Respiratory Disease Risk Through Smart Layouts

Chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma and pneumonia, remain significant in regions where biomass cooking and pollution are common. Effective hospital design can mitigate infection risk by:

  • Providing well ventilated waiting areas
  • Installing separate A&E and triage sections
  • Using antimicrobial flooring and easy-clean surfaces

Our ground floor plan features dedicated triage and isolation zones, cross ventilated corridors, and durable medical grade finishes aligned with best practices in “infection control hospital design” and “ventilation in clinics.”

Supporting Maternal & Child Health Services

Maternal mortality continues to be high in Kenya, with about 26 women dying per 100,000 live births daily. New hospitals need:

  • Private consultation and triage units
  • Clean, accessible washrooms
  • Safe transport routes to emergency and delivery wards

Although currently equipped as Level 4, the Mombasa project was designed with future maternal/child care expansion in mind. A well-located triage near emergency access, clear signage, and gender sensitive facilities position it for seamless integration into maternal hospital design strategies.

Addressing Obesity & Lifestyle Disease Trends

Recent studies show growing obesity and lifestyle disease prevalence, especially in urban areas like Mombasa, where fast food and sedentary behavior affect nearly 13% of adults. Hospitals play a role by:

  • Offering screening clinics
  • Providing wellness education spaces
  • Supporting future wellness and physiotherapy zones

Our design edition includes flexible rooms for nutritionists and physiotherapy, anticipating health promotion in hospitals and wellness-focused service delivery.

Enhancing Emergency Care Efficiency

Kenya’s hospitals often face overcrowding, especially in emergencies. A resilient emergency design requires:

  • Clear triage and A&E access
  • Strategic flow from entry to treatment
  • Vertical transport for critical cases

Mombasa Level 4 hospital provides a triage desk directly off reception, immediate access to A&E, and twin lifts in the core layout, emphasizing best practices in emergency ward layout and vertical patient transport.

 Future-Ready Infrastructure for Emerging Trends

Kenya’s health landscape is rapidly evolving with growing attention to digital health, social health insurance (SHA), and pandemic preparedness. The Mombasa project is ready for:

  • Digital record systems
  • Telehealth booths
  • Adaptable isolation rooms

Smartly integrated HVAC, medical-grade drainage meeting BS and MoH codes, and accessible utilities underpin a hospital built for future resilience.
