Project Overview

Thika Sam’s Level 4 Hospital is an ambitious, ongoing healthcare project that involves converting an existing five floor commercial office building into a modern medical facility. Located in Thika, Kiambu County, this project will bring advanced healthcare services closer to thousands of residents in the region. The project began on 27th May 2025 and is being delivered under a full Design and Build contract by HDL, a leader in healthcare infrastructure in Kenya.

Our team is overseeing the entire process, from architectural design and engineering to structural renovation and final fit out. Once completed, the facility will operate as a Level 4 hospital, serving both inpatients and outpatients with high quality care, advanced diagnostics, and emergency support.

Why Thika Needs This Hospital

Thika is one of the fastest growing towns in Kenya. Its population is increasing, but access to reliable and affordable healthcare remains a challenge. Many residents must travel long distances to reach well equipped hospitals in Nairobi or other urban centers. Thika Sam’s Hospital will close that gap by providing a full range of medical services within the town.

Besides transforming an existing office structure, HDL is using a cost effective and environmentally friendly model known as adaptive reuse. This method allows for faster project delivery, reduced material waste, and less disruption to the surrounding area.

What HDL Is Delivering?

As the main contractor, HDL is responsible for turning this building into a fully operational hospital that meets both local standards and international healthcare guidelines. Below is an outline of our scope:

Private Patient Rooms

The hospital will feature multiple private inpatient rooms across its floors. These rooms are designed for patient privacy, comfort, and recovery. Each will be equipped with proper ventilation, natural lighting, and easily cleanable surfaces to prevent infections.

Separate Male and Female Wards

Dedicated male and female wards are being built to respect patient privacy and cultural considerations. These wards will allow hospital staff to provide efficient care while ensuring safety and comfort for all patients.

A Fully Equipped Sluice Room

A key hygiene feature of this hospital will be a modern sluice room. This facility will support safe disposal of medical waste and contaminated fluids. It is designed according to international infection prevention and control (IPC) standards and will help minimize the spread of hospital-acquired infections.

Structural and Vertical Expansion

HDL is reinforcing the existing building structure to accommodate five fully functional hospital floors. This includes strengthening slabs and beams, adding new stairwells and elevators, and improving accessibility. The vertical expansion maximizes the use of limited urban land while maintaining safety and structural integrity.

Installation of MEP Systems

We are integrating critical hospital grade systems, including:

  • Medical gas lines for oxygen and vacuum supply
  • HVAC systems to control temperature and air quality
  • Plumbing and drainage systems to ensure clean water and proper waste removal
  • Electrical installations, including backup power to support uninterrupted care

All these systems are being installed with efficiency, safety, and sustainability in mind.

Conclusion

Thika Sam’s Level 4 Hospital is a perfect example of how smart design and responsible building practices can solve real healthcare challenges. HDL is proud to lead this transformation. With strong collaboration between engineers, architects, medical planners, and contractors, we are on track to deliver a world-class hospital that will serve Thika and its surrounding communities for years to come. 👉 Follow us on Facebook for project updates and inspiration:facebook.com/healthcaredesigners
