Project Overview

Healthcare Designers Limited (HDL), in partnership with the county government, has undertaken the construction of the Mother and Child Hospital Kamaki — a Level 4 maternal health facility designed to transform access to health care and improve community health in Kiambu County. This innovative project focuses on developing modern healthcare facilities that offer a wide range of health services including maternal, pediatric, and mental health care.

Kenya’s maternal mortality ratio remains alarmingly high at over 300 deaths per 100,000 live births. Many pregnant women still face challenges such as traveling long distances to seek health care from skilled health professionals and qualified birthing attendants rather than relying on a traditional birth attendant. This project aims to reduce these barriers by providing high quality and accessible health facilities close to the community, thus improving maternal and child health outcomes.

From the groundbreaking ceremony to the final construction phases, this hospital represents more than just a building — it is a beacon of hope and healing, carefully designed to support safe antenatal care, deliveries, and postnatal recovery in a compassionate and nurturing environment.

“The true essence of this Mother and Child Hospital is not just in its structure, but in the thoughtful design and interiors that shape a healing environment. Every brick laid, every space planned, and every detail crafted is dedicated to creating a sanctuary where care, comfort, and life itself can flourish

The Groundbreaking Moment

When we first broke ground on this hospital, we couldn’t have imagined the profound impact it would have. That moment marked the beginning of something greater than just a building—it was the birth of a healthcare sanctuary for mothers and children in our community. Looking back, we see not just the foundation we laid that day, but the hope, care, and healing that now stand in its place.

Designing process

We took time to carefully design every aspect of the hospital, ensuring that each space would serve its purpose with efficiency and comfort. Through detailed planning and visualization, we explored possibilities, refined layouts, and envisioned a facility that would truly meet the needs of mothers and children. Every decision, from structure to interiors, was made with the goal of creating a healing environment that blends functionality with warmth.

Building the Structure

As we progressed from groundbreaking, the next major phase was constructing the robust structure that will support this state-of-the-art facility. Our engineering and construction teams have been hard at work laying a strong foundation, erecting resilient frameworks, and ensuring that every beam and column meets the highest safety and quality standards. This phase is crucial—not only does it provide stability, but it also sets the stage for innovative design and modern interiors that will soon take shape. The structure itself is a testament to precision engineering, built to withstand the test of time while accommodating advanced medical technology.

Progressing to Interiors

Now, as we stand at the stage of designing and perfecting the interiors, the hospital is taking shape into a haven of healing and care. Our dedicated team of architects and interior designers is carefully crafting spaces that blend comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Each room is designed with patient well-being in mind—from welcoming waiting areas to state-of-the-art treatment rooms, and nurturing recovery spaces.

Looking Ahead

As the project nears completion, the Mother and Child Hospital Kamaki is set to become a cornerstone of maternal and child health in Kiambu County. With robust support from the county government, it will significantly enhance access to health care for thousands of families, lowering maternal mortality and ensuring mothers and children receive the high quality care they deserve.

This facility is more than just a hospital — it is a vital step forward in building healthier communities and a hopeful future for all.
